The guilt of taking an hour

The guilt of taking an hour

September 11, 20263 min read

An hour for yourself can feel like an hour taken from your children, and in a household with one adult in it that is not an irrational feeling. The maths is real. There is one pool of time and attention, and everything comes out of it.

So the guilt is not a distortion to be argued away. It is worth taking seriously and then looking at properly.

Where the framing stops working

The calculation treats your capacity as a fixed resource that gets divided up. It is not fixed. It depletes, and it depletes faster when nothing is going back in.

Which means the comparison is not between an hour for you and an hour for them. It is between an hour for you and the version of you that shows up for the next several hundred hours. Patience is a resource. So is tone, and so is having anything left at bedtime, which is reliably the hardest part of the day and reliably the point at which you have least remaining.

Running permanently past empty is not a neutral state that only costs you.

The other thing worth saying

You are also allowed to want support for your own sake. Not as an investment in your parenting. Just because you are a person having a hard time.

A lot of single parents will only permit themselves the instrumental version, where looking after yourself is justified by what it does for the children. That version is true and it is not the whole of it, and needing the justification is itself worth noticing.

Why the guilt is louder when you are on your own

In a two adult household, one taking an hour is covered by the other. It reads as normal, because the household absorbs it.

On your own there is no absorbing. The hour has to be arranged, someone has to watch the children or the hour has to come out of sleep, and the whole thing requires a plan. Which means it cannot be casual, and anything that cannot be casual gets weighed, and anything that gets weighed can be talked yourself out of.

The practical answer to a practical problem

A lot of this is logistics wearing the costume of guilt. An appointment that requires childcare in order to attend is really an appointment about childcare, and most people give up at that step rather than at the decision.

Sessions after bedtime, before the house wakes, or in the gap between drop off and work change the shape of the problem. So does not having to drive anywhere. It does not make the hour free, but it stops it costing three hours to spend one.
